Monday Matters #7

Columnist Gail Collins (NY Times)

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/11/26/opinion/ok-now-ron-paul.html?ref=gailcollins

Although Collins doubts Ron Paul will win the presidential election, she defends some of his characteristics and actions after mentioning his faults. Paul has many "pet peeves," or things he does not believe in, like the government issuing marriage licenses. This tends to lead to opposition from his own side as a Republican, which hurts him. He's also very honest, even if he is old-fashioned (in his economic policies especially), or at least attempts to stay true to his original stance in every matter. In all, he cannot be completely disliked, but he is not someone you would want for President.

The Occupy Wall Street Movement

Opinion #3
http://washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/columnists/2011/10/no-adults-among-occupy-wall-street-protesters

The columnist of this article does not even believe that this movement should be recognized, and unlike Vice President Biden, doesn't see any similarities between it and the Tea Party movement. He claims that there are "no adults among the protesters," who would be responsible enough to help the economy by looking for jobs. Instead, they are just gathering in crowds to draw attention to themselves and gain political power.

The Occupy Wall Street Movement

Opinion #2
http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1011/66257.html

In this writer's opinion, those who are occupying wall street are not comparable to the Tea Partiers, who had their movement a couple years ago. It bothers when people say they are similar in any way. He believes that the people that are occupying wall street are just criminals who want to "tear America down," whereas the Tea Party movement wanted to rebuild it, and force the government to be responsible again.

The Occupy Wall Street Movement

Opinion #1

Clint Reilly agrees with the movement on wall street, or the other 99%, that are protesting against the 1% who make 25% of the nation's income. They do not have a sense of responsibility towards their fellow millions of Americans because, in his opinion, they are selfish and since they are so wealthy, the problems of the lower classes have no importance or affect on them. He believes in the importance of the demonstrations and that it is hopeful that so many people are participating in this organized, peaceful movement.

Visual Rhetoric

In this painting, Liberty leading the People, by Eugene Delacroix, there is a woman leading the people during a battle. It was painted during the French Revolution of 1830 when many people were inspired by the ideal of liberty and individualism. The painting draws your eye to the flag and the woman in the picture, which emphasizes the focus of liberty and the French Republic during the time. The audience was the people in France who supported the revolution as well as outside countries to provoke a response and encourage revolution and freedom. It is a very persuasive image that commands attention and became a symbol of the Revolution as well as the power and will of the people.

In the News Virginian, Ron Hiserman wrote that the 9/11 memorial he attended was moving and altogether successful. He believes that we cannot forget the terrorist attacks on 9/11, and the 10th anniversary represented the true patriotism and thankfulness of Americans.

With the 10th anniversary of 9/11 this Sunday, the United States will commemorate all the lives lost that tragic day. President Obama will attend important sites like the Pentagon, Ground Zero, and one of the more anticipated events: the opening of the September 11 memorial in New York at the former World Trade center location. Former Presidents Bill Clinton and George Bush will also give speeches and be interviewed on this historic day in America's history.
